HIMOINSA introduces its electrification strategy at Bauma

More than 495,000 visitors attended Bauma 2022, considered the global meeting point for the construction, public works and mining machinery industry. An event that has exceeded all expectations and in which HIMOINSA has positioned itself as a strategic partner in energy solutions and storage systems for rental and construction companies.

HIMOINSA, over the last few years, has been working on structuring and categorising its product, throwing open the windows to electrification, which will be seen in a cross-cutting manner in all its product units: MOBILE POWER, ON-SITE POWER, POWER SOLUTIONS and TELECOM POWER

The company has introduced at Bauma its complete range of ‘Mobile Power’ products which includes battery power storage systems, lighting towers (hybrid version) and stage V-compliant gas and diesel generator. One of the key points at this edition of Bauma has been its commitment to sustainability and digitalisation. This was made clear during the press conference held on the 26th, where HIMOINSA's electrification strategy and its roadmap towards reducing emissions were unveiled.

    Will you miss it?

The company, which has already launched new battery-powered products such as the EHR | Battery Power Generator and the HBOX+ Hybrid lighting tower, has already defined the new battery-driven solutions that will be developed over the next three years. In this context, HIMOINSA has divided its roadmap into three major development blocks:

A battery power generation solution for which several models up to 60kW/h have already been developed. In this case, our intention is to extend the product roadmap to 2MW to cover higher power generation needs. This is a Mobile Power solution designed to reduce emissions in short- and medium-term mobile applications.   The EHR is clearly a new power storage and generation system that can work as a single source of power generation (as an island) to supply construction machinery (cranes, pumps...) or can even be integrated with gas and diesel generator sets, thus reducing the number of hours the generator sets have to run. The EHR is also prepared to be connected to the grid or to photovoltaic modules, guaranteeing reduced emissions during the power generation process at all times.

Mobile Power equipment used to recharge electrical machinery for construction, agriculture, mining... (excavators, building site containers, UTVs…).  “Now that the equipment fleet is being electrified, rental companies need on-site charging stations to ensure that they can recharge their equipment, as well as easily transportable units that can be made available to end users at work sites alongside whatever electric equipment they have rented”, explains Miguel Ángel Ruiz, Global Engineering and Development Head at HIMOINSA, who adds that the company is even considering the possibility of offering containerised units with a capacity of up to 2MW that can charge several electric machinery and vehicles at the same time in order to optimise times and reduce downtime, especially on construction sites, at events and at the sites where rental companies keep their fleet.

Storage system used to accumulate surplus power at sites where there is a combination of multiple power sources (renewables, gas, diesel, biodiesel, etc). These storage solutions will be aimed at both off-grid and on-grid applications, and will complement HIMOINSA's product portfolio in its 'On-Site Power' product unit.

The company is therefore considering the design of flexible solutions to support electrification in stationary applications and to complement existing distribution grids. And in this context, BESS, our battery-based power storage system, has an important role to play when it comes to micro-grids and, to a large extent, with power ratings ranging from 500kW to 2MW.

One of the main value propositions of this project to electrify equipment is the management system that integrates communication between all power sources into a single control interface. So, what HICORE is and the role it plays in the development of this new equipment?

HICORE is the control unit and management system that HIMOINSA has designed for its battery power generation solutions. It is the central management core, and it has been endowed with a logic that allows it to take decisions and simplify operations, guaranteeing maximum communication and rapport with the other components and external connection sources.
A solution designed ad-hoc by HIMOINSA for this product that makes it possible to configure each scenario in three basic steps, under its maxim of ‘simplicity of use’, and it can be integrated with gas and diesel generators or connected to public electricity grids and renewable energy sources.

HIMOINSA has undoubtedly showed at Bauma that is working on the development of new products based on an energy mix and alternative fuel technologies so that it can offer the market a comprehensive range of solutions at the cutting edge of new technologies and energy sources.
We are working on the electrification of products that will coexist alongside the traditional gas and diesel generator sets that HIMOINSA has offered historically, and we are also working hard to reduce our carbon footprint with more efficient and environmentally sustainable gas and diesel generator solutions”, explains Francisco Gracia, President & CEO at HIMOINSA.

As part of its electrification strategy, HIMOINSA has created a multidisciplinary team for the new storage and battery-driven solutions division that works on the planning, design, development and manufacture of new products. From the Operations area, work has been carried out on the start-up of new facilities for the location of the new battery systems production lines to enable scalable development of the project in terms of manufacturing.

As a Yanmar Group company, HIMOINSA has drawn up a plan to integrate control electronics, power electronics, batteries and battery management systems to guarantee the development of new solutions in this electrification process. So much so that it is working closely with Yanmar Energy System, Yanmar's power division of which HIMOINSA has formed part since 2015, to create a global R&D team based in Valencia, in one of HIMOINSA’s companies that has historically been dedicated to the development of electronic systems and has considerable experience in the design of both software and firmware.

Yanmar, our parent company, is undertaking a series of activities based on its ‘Yanmar Green Challenge 2050’. During the press conference, Tetsuya Yamamoto, Managing Executive Officer and COO at Yanmar Holdings, explained that YGC2050 is based on three main objectives:
“First, to achieve business activities with zero GHG emission ant Yanmar. Second, to realice our activities free from ecological footprints by recycling Resources and third, to contribute to our customers to relize the same two goals as well”.
Yanmar has already embarked on several new-energy projects in its various business lines, including hydrogen-powered cogeneration, research into hydrogen-fuelled marine engines, biogas cogeneration, natural gas dual-fuel power solutions, marine fuel cell technology, smart agriculture, and resource recycling technologies.
