Backup Power for critical sports broadcasting infrastructure in the UK

HIMOINSA has strengthened the backup power infrastructure for global motorsports broadcasting in the UK, ensuring absolute continuity of broadcasts. Designed to operate under the most demanding conditions, the installation combines synchronised generation, operational flexibility and infrastructure optimisation to eliminate risks and ensure uninterrupted performance.

HIMOINSA has installed 2 MW of power using generator sets operating in synchronisation, providing backup power for a company, located at Biggin Hill Airport in London. The solution, developed for a critical infrastructure for the broadcasting of international televised sporting events, increases the site’s resilience and guarantees operational continuity even in scenarios of maximum demand and concurrent operation of equipment.

Continuity engineering in high-demand broadcasting environments

In motorsports broadcasting environments linked to live global broadcasts, the power supply cannot fail. Power systems must serve both as a backup and as a structural component for operational continuity. The initial configuration is based on a standard N+1 architecture, provided a reliable operational foundation.

However, a subsequent analysis carried out by HIMOINSA identified a limitation in concurrent load scenarios, where the existing architecture showed limitations under concurrent operating conditions. In the context of this, HIMOINSA has developed the solution towards a technical approach aimed at guaranteeing full coverage under real operating conditions

DDGC Group Ltd has played a key role in ensuring the operational reliability of the system, guaranteeing that the three generator sets remain synchronised both with each other and with the site’s load during grid restoration. In a facility of this sensitivity, where commissioning and any critical interventions must be carried out exclusively during periods when there is no broadcast, the work demands technical precision and rigorous planning. With this approach, DDGC Group ensures the site remains fully operational at all times”, explains Robert Amos, Project Sales Manager at HIMOINSA Power Solutions Ltd.

Synchronised architecture to reinforce operational continuity

The solution developed by HIMOINSA, based on three fully synchronised HMW-800-T5 generator sets with an installed capacity of 2 MW, meets a clear requirement: to guarantee supply stability and full availability in an environment where continuity is non-negotiable.

The addition of a further unit to the two already installed during the first phase of the project ensures effective coverage under scenarios of maximum operational demand. As a result, the system increases its robustness, eliminates points of vulnerability and consolidates its ability to maintain the load without disruption, even in the event of one unit becoming unavailable.

Integrated design for performance and efficiency

One of the solution’s distinguishing features lies in its integrated design philosophy. All units are supplied in an L14-type soundproofed canopy configuration, incorporating key functionalities directly into each unit:

    • Fuel containment via tanks with an integrated retention sump.
    • Optimised management of ventilation and thermal performance.
    • Acoustic attenuation designed at the unit level.

The integration of these elements eliminates the need for complex external infrastructure, significantly reducing installation requirements and associated costs, without compromising performance or regulatory compliance.

Precise deployment in a confined environment of high historical value

The deployment of the generator sets required high-precision installation in a technical room with limited space. Consequently, every design and assembly decision has been guided by criteria of operability, accessibility and long-term maintainability.

Located at London Biggin Hill Airport, one of the country’s most iconic aerodromes and a historic site since the Battle of Britain, this project reflects HIMOINSA’s ability to adapt solutions to technically complex environments. In this case, the soundproofed enclosure configuration ensures reliable and consistent performance in the face of variable environmental conditions, such as the British climate, enhancing autonomy, system protection and sustained performance over time.

This project reflects a clear shift in focus: from standard backup solutions to energy architectures designed for resilience. In critical transmission infrastructure, continuity is built through engineering. HIMOINSA provides the technical capability to make this possible.
